Spandau Citadel

The Spandau Citadel (Zitadelle Spandau) is one of the best-preserved Renaissance fortresses in Europe and a major historical landmark in Berlin. Built in the 16th century to defend against military threats, the fortress is a striking example of Renaissance military architecture with its symmetrical layout of four bastions named King, Queen, Crown Prince, and Brandenburg. The iconic Juliusturm, standing at 34.6 meters high, is the oldest building in Berlin and offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding Spandau area and the River Havel.

Originally a strategic military fortress, Spandau Citadel has evolved into a vibrant cultural center hosting numerous events, including exhibitions, concerts, and medieval festivals. Visitors can explore a variety of historical exhibitions within the fortress, including artifacts from the medieval era and remains of a Slavic fortification dating back to around 1050. The museum within the Kommandantenhaus provides insight into the fortress's rich history, while the West Curtain displays archaeological finds, including Jewish gravestones.

The citadel also features a unique “Bat Cellar” (Fledermauskeller), home to around 200 bats, and offers a fascinating exhibition about these nocturnal creatures, making it an especially interesting spot for families with children. Additionally, the annual Citadel Music Festival, held in the summer, transforms the fortress into an open-air concert venue, attracting up to 10,000 attendees with performances by both national and international music stars.

Today, Spandau Citadel is not only a historical site but also a hub for cultural activities and entertainment. Whether enjoying a guided tour, attending an event, or simply strolling around the grounds, visitors can experience the lively atmosphere of this historic site while exploring over 1,000 years of history.
