Ploschad Vosstaniya is located at the intersection of Nevsky and Ligovsky Prospekt. It is surrounded by the Oktyabrskaya Hotel building, the ground lobby of the Ploshchad Vosstaniya metro station and the Moskovsky railway station.

Until 1918, the square was called Znamenskaya in honor of the chapel of the lost church in the name of the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem, consecrated in 1765 in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “The Sign”.

In the center of the square in 1909, a monument to Emperor Alexander III was erected. On its pedestal there is a line from the poems of Demyan Bedny “I'm stuck here with a cast iron scarecrow for the country.” Now this sculpture can be seen in the courtyard of the Marble Palace. Later, in 1985, an obelisk to the Hero City Leningrad was installed in its place in memory of the heroism of its inhabitants during the Great Patriotic War.

Moskovsky railway station was built in the middle of the XIX century and was then called Nikolaevsky. At that time, Moscow and St. Petersburg were connected by the Nikolaev railway. After the revolution of 1917, it was renamed Oktyabrskaya. Today, you can see the OCT symbol on the tickets in the “Departure” or “Arrival” line. This means you need to go to the Moskovsky railway station.

The Oktyabrskaya Hotel was built back in 1857, and it was assumed that many guests from Moscow would find it convenient to stay here. Its first name was the Znamenskaya Hotel, later it was called Severnaya, Bolshaya Severnaya, and after the revolution it received its current name Oktyabrskaya.
