Peacock Island

Peacock Island, or Pfaueninsel, is a picturesque island located in the River Havel, southwest of Berlin. The island, spanning 67 hectares, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known for its romantic landscape and historical significance. The island was first developed in the late 18th century by King Frederick William II of Prussia, who commissioned the construction of a summer palace and a dairy in a picturesque, ruin-like style.

Peacock Island is famous for its exotic trees, colorful peacocks, and other wildlife, including water buffaloes that help maintain the landscape. The island features numerous attractions, including the white palace with its two towers, designed to look like a ruin, and various garden structures like the dairy and the Memorial Temple for Queen Louise.

The island was landscaped by the renowned garden artist Peter Joseph Lenné in 1821, adding to its charm with beautifully designed pathways, vistas, and the oldest rose garden in Berlin. Visitors can explore these paths, enjoy the serene environment, and learn about the island's history through various informational displays.

Access to Peacock Island is via a ferry that operates from the Wannsee district. The ferry ride offers a scenic view of the River Havel and the island. Due to its status as a protected habitat, no dogs or bicycles are allowed, and smoking is prohibited on the island. The island is open year-round, with ferry services operating daily from 10:00 to 18:00 in summer and from 10:00 to 16:00 in winter.
