Panthéon

The Panthéon is a neoclassical building located in the Latin Quarter of Paris, initially constructed as a church dedicated to Saint Geneviève, the patron saint of Paris. Designed by architect Jacques-Germain Soufflot, the Panthéon was inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, with the intention of rivaling major European churches like Saint Peter's Basilica. Completed in the late 18th century, the building was soon deconsecrated during the French Revolution and transformed into a mausoleum to honor prominent figures in French history.

The Panthéon is now the final resting place of over 70 illustrious personalities who have shaped the identity of France, including Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Victor Hugo, Emile Zola, Alexandre Dumas, and Marie and Pierre Curie. The crypt is a solemn space that highlights the legacy of these great individuals. In addition, the Panthéon houses Foucault's pendulum, an impressive scientific demonstration originally installed by physicist Léon Foucault in 1851 to illustrate the Earth's rotation.

The Panthéon's dome offers breathtaking panoramic views of Paris, accessible to those willing to climb its 200 steps. Throughout the year, the Panthéon hosts various temporary exhibitions and cultural events that enrich the visitor experience. With its combination of grand architecture, history, and culture, the Panthéon remains a significant and moving tribute to the great men and women of France.
