monument to Paul I

[Mikhailovsky Castle] (http://kudago.com/spb/place/mihajlovskij-inzhenernyj-zamok/), also called Engineering Castle, was built by decree of Paul I in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The emperor suspected some nobles of trying to stage a palace coup and was afraid of a sudden attack in panic. It was for this reason that he did not want to stay in the [Winter Palace] anymore (http://kudago.com/spb/place/zimnij-dvorec-petra-1/) and moved to the newly built Mikhailovsky Castle. A month and a half later, the emperor was assassinated, as a result of which he was killed in his own bedchamber. Rumor has it that his [spirit] (http://kudago.com/spb/list/prizraki-peterburga/) is still wandering around the castle in search of murderers.

In honor of the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg celebrated in 2003, a **monument to Pavel I** was erected in the courtyard of the castle, authored by V. Gorevoy.
