The Houses of Parliament
The Houses of Parliament, also known as the Palace of Westminster, is the seat of the UK Parliament and a symbol of British democracy. Located on the banks of the River Thames, the site has been a center of power since the Middle Ages. The current Gothic Revival structure, designed by Sir Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin, was built after a devastating fire in 1834 destroyed much of the original medieval palace.
The complex is home to the two houses of the UK Parliament: the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The iconic Big Ben, which is actually the nickname for the Great Bell housed within the Elizabeth Tower, is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world. The clock tower is a quintessential symbol of London, often featured in depictions of the city.
Inside the Houses of Parliament, visitors can explore historic chambers like the House of Commons, where elected Members of Parliament debate and pass legislation, and the House of Lords, where appointed members review and suggest amendments to bills. The richly decorated interiors reflect the grandeur of the Victorian era, with intricate woodwork, stained glass windows, and numerous statues and paintings depicting key figures in British history.
The Palace of Westminster is also the site of the annual State Opening of Parliament, a ceremony full of pomp and tradition where the monarch delivers the Queen’s Speech from the throne in the House of Lords, outlining the government’s agenda for the coming year. Guided tours are available to the public, offering a rare opportunity to step inside the heart of British politics and witness firsthand where history continues to be made.
