Nikolai Gastello died as soon as the war broke out, on June 26, 1941. But the circumstances of his death made the pilot a hero posthumously. He was killed when he directed his downed burning plane at a German paramilitary convoy and thereby destroying it.

The graffiti created by the Decorate the City art association is located on 4th Sokolnicheskaya Street, which is just a stone's throw from the street named after the legendary pilot.
