The Circus Maximus, located between the Aventine and Palatine hills, was the largest stadium in ancient Rome, capable of holding an estimated 300,000 spectators. Originally used for chariot races, its origins date back to the time of the early Roman kings, but it was during the reign of Julius Caesar that the site was first fully developed into a proper walled stadium. The venue hosted a variety of public events including games, triumphal processions, and gladiatorial competitions, becoming a central part of Roman social and political life.

The current site is largely an open field, but excavations have revealed remnants of the original structure, including stone tiers for seating, shops (tabernae), and sections of the original pavement. Visitors can now experience the site through the innovative 'Circo Maximo Experience,' which uses augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) to recreate the grandeur of the original Circus Maximus, showing visitors what the stadium and surrounding area would have looked like during its peak. Highlights include a virtual race with chariots and a reconstructed view of the Arch of Titus.

The Circus was reconstructed multiple times throughout its history, most notably by Emperor Trajan, who expanded the stadium and added many of the features seen today. It continued to be used for public events until the early 6th century, after which it served various other purposes, including agricultural use during the Middle Ages. Restoration and archaeological work began in the 20th century to preserve and showcase this iconic landmark of Roman history.
