Alexandrovsky Garden

This place is interesting because it combines history and modernity. Alexander Garden owes its appearance on the city map to Emperor Alexander I, by whose decree the park was created in honor of the victory of the Russian army in the Patriotic War of 1812.

The park is located in the heart of the city in close proximity to one of the busiest streets in Moscow — Tverskaya Street. However, the frantic rhythm of the capital is practically not felt here. Wide alleys, centuries-old trees, well-kept emerald lawns, flower beds — all this allows you to forget that you are in the center of a giant metropolis.

Once on the site of the park was the waters of the Neglinnaya River According to the project of architect Osip Bove, the river was hidden in underground pipes, and luxurious gardens were laid out in its place. Initially, all three gardens — Upper, Nizhny and Middle — were called Kremlin gardens. But 30 years after their construction, as part of a project to restore the city after the fire of 1812, the gardens were named after Emperor Alexander I.

Several interesting facts are connected with Alexander Park. Few people know that a huge earthen mountain was built on the site of the famous Ruina grotto, or, as it is also called, the Italian Grotto. Instead of stone boulders, there were a large number of stone cannon balls on the mountain, which were previously used instead of cast-iron ones. During the construction, the wings of the Italian Grotto were laid out with fragments of buildings that were damaged during the invasion of Napoleon's army in Moscow. In the 19th century, a live orchestra played in this grotto, delighting the ears of the aristocracy walking through the park.

According to the original plan of the architects, Neglinka was not going to be completely removed underground. They wanted to use part of the waters to create artificial ponds. But the project was never implemented. However, in 1996, Moscow architect Zurab Tsereteli still built a sculptural group along the fence of the Upper Garden with a fountain that imitates the bed of the Neglinnaya River.

The Alexander Garden became especially popular after the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame were moved to the park from Red Square. Thousands of people come to see the change of sentries at the first post of These are mainly tourists. To capture the most beautiful ritual, they are ready to wait an hour: this is how much time passes between sentry shifts.

People often come here with the whole family. Here you can take a walk, eat ice cream, and stare at the figures of fairy-tale characters of the fountains. The time spent in the Alexander Garden is not wasted.
