The Villa Borghese Gardens, also known as Giardini di Villa Borghese, are one of Rome's largest and most beautiful public parks, covering over 80 hectares. Located just north of Rome's historic center, the gardens were originally established in the early 17th century by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, nephew of Pope Paul V. He commissioned architects Flaminio Ponzio and Giovanni Vasanzio to design a villa surrounded by gardens inspired by the grandeur of Renaissance estates.

The gardens feature a mix of different styles, including English landscape sections and classical Italian features. Several notable attractions are located within the gardens, including the Galleria Borghese, a world-famous museum housing sculptures, paintings, and antiquities from artists such as Bernini, Caravaggio, and Raphael. The Galleria Borghese, originally a private collection amassed by Cardinal Scipione, is now a significant public art gallery.

The Temple of Aesculapius is a neoclassical temple situated on the edge of a small artificial lake, which is a popular spot for boat rides and photography. Another popular feature is the Pincio Terrace, located on the western edge of the gardens, offering breathtaking views of Rome, especially at sunset. Visitors can also find a replica of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, known as the Globe Theatre Roma, which hosts plays and other cultural events.

The gardens are not only a cultural hub but also a recreational area for both tourists and locals. There are numerous walking paths, lawns for picnicking, fountains, and sculptures, such as the Fountain of the Sea Horses. The park also includes a zoo called Bioparco di Roma, home to over 1,000 animals and focused on conservation efforts. Visitors can rent bikes, electric scooters, or even rowboats to explore the park. The gardens have several cafes and kiosks where you can grab refreshments during your visit.

Originally a private estate, Villa Borghese was purchased by the Italian state in 1901 and later transferred to the city of Rome. Since then, it has become a popular public space, blending history, art, and nature.
