Musée Nissim de Camondo
The Musée Nissim de Camondo is an exquisite house museum dedicated to 18th-century French decorative arts, located in the luxurious mansion of Count Moïse de Camondo. Built between 1911 and 1914 by architect René Sergent, the mansion replicates the style of the Petit Trianon at Versailles, reflecting the opulence of a noble residence from the time of Louis XV and Louis XVI. The museum features a remarkable collection, including French furniture, silverware, carpets from the Savonnerie factory, and other artifacts that Count Camondo collected throughout his lifetime.
The museum is a tribute to the legacy of the Camondo family, particularly Moïse's son, Nissim, who tragically died during World War I. The mansion remained intact after Moïse's death in 1935, as he bequeathed it to the Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs in memory of his son. The museum opened in 1936, showcasing not only the lavish state rooms but also the fully equipped kitchens and staff quarters, providing a unique glimpse into the life of an affluent family in the early 20th century.
The story of the Camondo family is both inspiring and poignant. As Sephardic Jews from Turkey, the Camondos were notable financiers who settled in Paris during the 19th century. Moïse's son, Nissim, fought for France during World War I and lost his life in 1917. During World War II, the remaining descendants, including Moïse's daughter Béatrice, her husband, and their children, were deported and perished in Auschwitz in 1943. The museum thus serves not only as a celebration of decorative arts but also as a memorial to the family's tragic fate.
