The House of World Cultures, known locally as the 'Pregnant Oyster' due to its distinct architecture, is a prominent forum for contemporary art and critical discussions in Berlin. Originally built as a congress hall in 1957 by American architect Hugh Stubbins, it was a gift from the U.S. to West Berlin, symbolizing German-American friendship during the Cold War. The striking building, located along the Spree River, features a unique free-floating roof structure that partly collapsed in 1980 and was subsequently rebuilt in 1987.

Since its transformation into the House of World Cultures in 1989, it has served as a center for international art and cultural dialogue. The program includes exhibitions, concerts, performances, and film screenings, focusing on various social and artistic themes from across the globe. It aims to dissolve boundaries between art forms and promote conversations on contemporary issues. The venue also hosts the popular open-air 'Wassermusik' festival every summer, which features a musical journey focusing on a particular region.

Another highlight is the adjacent Carillon, one of the largest bell towers in the world, featuring 68 bells. Live concerts are held every Sunday and on many public holidays.
