Charles Dickens Museum

The Charles Dickens Museum is housed in the only surviving London home of the great Victorian author, Charles Dickens. Located at 48 Doughty Street in Bloomsbury, this beautifully restored Georgian townhouse was where Dickens lived from 1837 to 1839 and where he wrote some of his most famous works, including 'Oliver Twist' and 'Nicholas Nickleby.'

Visitors to the museum can explore the house as it would have appeared in Dickens' time, offering a unique glimpse into his personal and professional life. The museum is spread across four floors, including ten rooms filled with an impressive collection of Dickens’ personal belongings, manuscripts, and memorabilia. Highlights include Dickens’ study, where his original writing desk and personal items such as his inkwell and pen are displayed, and the family dining room, which offers insights into the domestic life of the Dickens family.

The museum also features exhibits that explore the broader social and historical context of Dickens’ works, showcasing objects from the Victorian era, including a debtors' prison door and a Victorian kitchen range. Throughout the year, the museum hosts temporary exhibitions, talks, workshops, and performances that delve deeper into Dickens' influence on literature and his social activism.

Overall, the Charles Dickens Museum offers an immersive and intimate experience, perfect for literature lovers and history enthusiasts alike. It provides a unique opportunity to step back in time and explore the life and works of one of England’s most beloved authors.
