The Baths of Caracalla, known as the Thermae Antoninianae, were built between 212 and 216 AD under the direction of Emperor Caracalla. They served not only as public baths but also as a complex for socializing, exercise, and worship. The baths had an ingenious design with heated floors, advanced water supply, and drainage systems, which made it a marvel of Roman engineering.

The complex included the caldarium (hot room), tepidarium (warm room), and frigidarium (cold room), along with an Olympic-sized swimming pool called the natatio. Visitors could also stroll through the beautifully landscaped gardens or visit the two libraries that housed texts in Greek and Latin. These features showcased the Romans' emphasis on leisure, culture, and community life.

Though partially in ruins today, the grandeur of the baths is still apparent. The remaining brick walls and marble floors evoke its original splendor, which included vibrant frescoes, mosaics, and hundreds of sculptures. The Mithraeum, located underground, was a worship space for followers of the god Mithras and remains the largest of its kind in Rome.
